What is Guggul and who should use it?

Many people are considering using Guggul for managing metabolic disease.  Guggul, a resin derived from the mukul myrrh tree, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for various health purposes, including the treatment of metabolic disorders such as diabetes. There have been several studies conducted to explore the potential benefits of Guggul for preventing and treating type 2 diabetes, including the following:

  • A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2010 found that Guggul supplementation reduced blood sugar levels and improved insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetic patients.
  • Another study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences in 2012 found that Guggul extract improved glucose metabolism and reduced oxidative stress in diabetic rats.
  • A study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine in 2016 found that Guggul supplementation reduced blood sugar levels and improved glucose tolerance in type 2 diabetic patients.

Vital Force Herbal Clinic recommends Guggul as part of several protocols, as Guggul can be used both alone and synergistically with other herbs for treating many conditions. Guggul should always be under the guidance of a qualified herbalist or other healthcare provider, as it may interact with other medications and may have potential side effects.
